TCNJ AmeriCorps is committed to helping nonprofit organizations build the sustainability of programs beyond the presence of AmeriCorps support to meet community impact objectives. The program supports 30-40 members to address issues related to youth literacy, college access, food security, and job skill training. This position would be placed directly at Arm in Arm in Trenton, NJ serving the needs of the community who are food insecure.

Location(s): Mill One 1 N. Johnston Ave. Hamilton, NJ; 48 Hudson St., Trenton, NJ; or 61 Nassau St., Princeton, NJ

Member Duties : Assist in Hunger Prevention Program, under the direction of program coordinators, with responsibilities to include: 

  • Assist on-site at one of our 3 pantries with the preparation and packing of bags of food for distribution to community members experiencing food insecurity
  • Assist with GrabNGo outdoor food distribution events
  • Provide on-site assistance in organization of grocery deliveries to home bound clients 
  • Conduct on-site intake of pantry client information 
  • Assist in outreach to schools, congregations and civic organizations.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Arm In Arm is seeking an experienced professional for the part-time, non-exempt position of Homelessness Prevention Program Specialist (HPP Specialist).  The applicant should have knowledge of Mercer County services and community resources addressing poverty and homelessness.  The applicant should have strong written and verbal communications skills. Fluency in Spanish is preferred.  The position will report to the Director of Housing Stability Services.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION & IMPACT

The HPP Specialist helps advances the mission of Arm In Arm by providing direct service to clients who are facing an imminent threat of homelessness or who are currently homeless to regain housing stability through emergency financial assistance and case management services.  The HPP Specialist will work with the Homelessness Prevention team of Arm In Arm as well as other community partners to stabilize these households. COMPETENCIES & ESSENTIALS FOR SUCCESS

  • Provide direct and flexible services by conducting intakes of clients to prevent homelessness or end an episode of homelessness through emergency financial assistance and case management services.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other community resources to ensure the stabilization of client’s housing.
  • Collaborate with other service providers.
  • Educate clients on tenant’s rights and personal financial management.
  • Advocate on behalf of families with landlords, utility providers and all relevant social service agencies to support their housing stabilization.
  • Maintaining and interacting with clients in a culturally sensitive, respectful and professional manner.
  • Create and maintain listing of housing options for program participants.
  • Provide education in community settings regarding homelessness prevention services.
  • Complete and submit reports as required.
  • Ensure that data is properly collected and place in agency’s database and state database within five (5) business days upon receipt of documentation.
  • Develop and conduct four (4) focus groups with people with lived experience and expertise.
  • Attend and participate in meetings with director and funding source.
  • Attend required trainings and meetings.
  • Able to communicate with Spanish speaking clients.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • One to two years of experience in Social Services
  • Satisfactory background clearance
  • Knowledge of Mercer County services and community resources
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office

The Hunger Prevention Program Assistant helps to advance the mission of Arm In Arm by assisting the Director of Hunger Prevention to maintain and manage the operation of the food pantry and related services, focusing on daily client service hours and preparation and closure of the pantry.  The Hunger Prevention Program Assistant assists with unloading of food deliveries, storage, and inventory management/related reporting and stocking of food as needed. 

  • Assist on-site at Hudson pantry with preparation and packing of bags of food for distribution to community members experiencing food insecurity
  • Assist with Mobile food distribution events
  • Support food pantry activities by working as needed including the unloading and storage of food inventory and donations
  • Pack bags with food for distribution to pantry clients
  • Lift food inventory, including cases weighing 25 pounds, throughout shift
  • Conduct intake of pantry client information
  • Assist in outreach to schools, churches and civic organizations
  • Train and supervise volunteers
  • Maintain high level of hospitality for clients
  • Provide assistance with other projects as needed

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Ability to work independently with strong sense of focus
  • Ability to build and or work with a team to achieve results
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to motivate others toward achieving goals
  • Demonstrates consistent and reliable performance, including timely completion of duties
  • Microsoft Office proficient
  • Understands and conforms and complies with all standards and policies regarding confidentiality and record keeping
  • Able to communicate with Spanish speaking clients

Requirements

  • Associate degree in related field or comparable work experience strongly preferred
  • Satisfactory background clearance
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
